Supporting Procurement of Nutrition Products for Ethiopian Pharmaceuticals Supply Service

Context

In Ethiopia, years of conflict, drought, and economic shocks have left nearly 20% of the population undernourished, with millions of residents facing moderate or severe acute malnutrition. In response, the Federal Ministry of Health and the Ethiopian Pharmaceuticals Supply Service (EPSS) increased efforts to procure and distribute essential nutrition commodities, including ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) and ready-to-use supplementary food (RUSF) for children under five. Connexi partnered with EPSS to implement efficient procurement, storage, and distribution systems, essential for maintaining an uninterrupted supply of nutrition products.

The Opportunity

Leveraging Connexi’s extensive supplier networks and distribution expertise, we successfully facilitated the procurement and delivery of essential ready-to-use nutrition products throughout Ethiopia, including to remote areas.

The expansion of EPSS-contracted services reflects Connexi’s growing presence in the region. By adhering to federal regulatory guidelines, Connexi upholds its commitment to ethical and compliant business practices. Our strong supplier relationships and deep understanding of the Ethiopian market have enabled us to navigate complex logistics challenges, ensuring the timely delivery of essential health commodities and enhancing healthcare accessibility in Ethiopia.

Results

Between March 2022 and May 2023, Connexi delivered over 5.7 million units of ready-to-use therapeutic food, significantly bolstering malnutrition treatment efforts in hard-to-reach communities across Ethiopia. These deliveries played a vital role in improving the health outcomes of vulnerable populations, underscoring Connexi’s commitment to supporting critical health interventions in challenging environments.
